School Policies

The goal of our new behavior system is to place the emphasis on the positive behaviors and letting kids know what is okay to do rather than what they cannot do. For example, don't run in the hall is a fairly vague description of what students should be doing in the hall. This behavior system sets up a set of expectations and procedures to clearly identify what students CAN and SHOULD be doing. By using this system, we are focusing attention on academic engagement and achievement. Students are encouraged to use appropriate behaviors such as being respectful and responsible. As we continue to implement this new system, we expect rule-violating behaviors to be minimized.

As a staff, we have agreed on the following sets of expectations for our students. Any set of expectations may be changed as needed.

Voice Levels:

0 = no voice; 1 = whispering; 2 = normal talking 3 = outside voice

Staff members tell students the voice level that is expected for the activity in progress.

Bus Expectations:

  • take all items with you before leaving the building
  • walk on the sidewalk
  • keep hands and feet to yourself
  • board your bus right away
  • keep arms and head inside of bus at all times
  • listen to your bus driver

Bus Procedure:

Students will walk out the kindergarten community door directly to the bus loop. Students will stay on the sidewalks and go directly to the bus area to board the bus.

Entering/exiting the Building Expectations:

  • walk at all times
  • hawkhands at all times
  • wait for vehicles to come to a complete stop before entering or exiting
  • always use the crosswalk with an older sibling or adult
  • walk in the middle of the sidewalk to avoid falling into traffic
  • stay lined up on the inside of the sidewalk (closest to the building) until your ride arrives

Entering/exiting the Building Procedure:

Students will enter/exit through the front doors only. This includes the students in the mobiles. Kindergarten students may enter through the kindergarten classroom doors. Students will line up on the sidewalk to wait for pickup.

Hawkway Expectations:

  • walk quietly on the right side of the hall in a single file line
  • keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself
  • hawk hands mean your hands are at your sides
  • on the ramp, keep one hand on the rail and the other at your side

Hawkway Procedure:

Students will walk on the right hand side of the hallway. When using the ramp, walk up the right side and down the left side. Use the railing to hold onto. Students should walk at all times. Level 0 voices should be used.

Lunch Expectations:

  • stop and check the condiments table
  • use Level 1 voice at all times
  • use good table manners (chewing with your mouth closed, talking without food in your mouth, keeping elbows off the table, talking about pleasant subjects)
  • clean up area
  • wait to be dismissed by raising your hand
  • keep your hands to yourself while waiting in line for food or pick up
  • exit quietly and orderly

Lunch Procedure:

Lunch box tubs should be placed beside the door at the top of the ramp entering the lunchroom. Students eating cold lunch will get lunch boxes and proceed to the table to be seated. If a student eating cold lunch needs to get a milk, that student should go into the serving area, get milk and pay for it without waiting in line. Keep your hands to yourself while waiting in line for food or pick up. After exiting the serving area, students should stop at the condiment area to get ketchup, mustard, etc. before being seated. Students will be excused for recess by raising a hand to be recognized to go and dump trash.

Playground Expectations:

  • avoid playing on the hills
  • go up the stairs and down the slide one at a time
  • sit on a swing like you would sit in a chair
  • be a good RISE citizen on the playground
  • practice safety at all times - leave sand, dirt, rocks, and snow on the ground
  • play only where you can be seen by a teacher

Playground Procedure:

All students, when exiting the cafeteria, will walk to the right of the pole. Stay on the sidewalk and walk on the sidewalk at all times. All equipment should be picked up and carried into the building when recess is over. Level 3 voices may be used.

Assembly Expectations:

  • practice self control
  • remain quiet and attentive
  • keep hands and feet to yourself
  • sit flat
  • use good manners
  • use Level 0 voice

Assembly Procedure:

Assembly attendance is earned, so students who are on read or not on their best behavior will be in the media center with heads down being monitored by an adult. There will be a rotating schedule for coverage of students who will not attend the assembly. Students will enter/exit assemblies in a quiet, orderly manner, sit quietly while the assembly is being conducted, and be respectful of the performers or speakers by being attentive and courteous.
